New Fly Fishing Gear 2020

Believe it or not, May is just two weeks away, and the time to get out and fish our Colorado freestone rivers and alpine lakes is quickly approaching. With the extra time on our hands during this pandemic, we were able to put together a list of the new fly fishing gear that we are most excited about for the upcoming season. Our staff has had the opportunity to see some of this gear firsthand at the Denver Fly Fishing Show in January, as well as through some of our brand reps who have stopped by the shop and showed off their new products.

In recent weeks we have been in the process of stocking the shelves of our fly shop in Estes Park with this new gear, and look forward to seeing you this summer! In the meantime, here is some of the new gear that you can be drooling over.

Rods and Reels

Sage Trout LL

It has been a few seasons since we have been this excited about a new fly rod. When it comes to fly fishing Estes and Rocky Mountain National Park, there are few rods that are better suited for our small stream applications than the Trout LL. When we envision fishing the Trout LL, we picture making casts in Moraine Park on the upper Big Thompson, or nearby Glacier Creek. This rod is built for delicate presentations, and the supple tip is great for close presentations and small flies. The rod combines many elements of discontinued Sage models that we had grown to love, and is available in a three-weight through a six-weight.

New Look Orvis Recon

For 2020, Orvis has updated one of their more affordable fly rods, the Recon. Has much changed about the performance of the rod? Not necessarily. But the rod itself does have a fresh new look that is current with the newer H3 rod models, and is still backed by the exceptional Orvis warranty. When it comes to rod and reel combo kits, there are few that perform better in this price range than the Recon combo.

Updated Ross San Miguel Reel

Those who have been fly fishing since before Instagram made it cool may remember the San Miguel as one of the most popular reels of its time. Unfortunately, the reel was discontinued in the early 2000s. The good news, however, is that it is back and better than ever. With a solid black, glossy finish, and an extremely smooth spool, the San Miguel is an excellent addition to any trout rod that you may have in your arsenal. What’s better, these reels are constructed right here in Colorado.

Abel Vaya Reels

Just when you thought that Abel Reels couldn’t get any better, they introduced the Vaya line. The brown trout pattern design of the Vaya reel looks great on any rod, but the performance is what sets these Abel reels apart from any other on the market. The highly engineered multi-disk drag system is highly adjustable, and still provides substantial resistance in the right situations. As with all Abel products, this new line of reels comes with a hefty price tag. Feel free to come by the shop to check them out!

Boots and Waders

Patagonia SwiftCurrent Waders

For all of us Patagonia lovers out there, this tried and true brand has made yet another fantastic update to their zip-front waders for 2020. Along with being manufactured in a new colorway, these waders have also received updates to the zippers and pockets for increased durability. One of the things we love most about these waders is the breathability and ease of mobility. Scrambling down that boulder field to get to the river has never been easier in these waders.

Simms Tributary Boot

In recent years, it seems like it has been difficult for the weekend warriors to find a dependable wading boot at an affordable price that also looks great. Simms new Tributary Boot for 2020 may have fixed this. Priced at just $99.95, we have found that these boots are surprisingly durable, and both the felt and rubber bottom models have great traction on our local streams here around Estes Park.

Patagonia Tough Puff Hoody

Last year, we could barely keep Patagonia’s Tough Puff Hoodies on the racks. Our guides love them for Spring and Fall outings, as well as those Summer days in the backcountry where the sun never fully breaks through the clouds. This year, the tough puff is available in our shop in a brand new, all black color-way. It looks slick on the river, but can also be pulled off for a trip downtown with your date.

Whether you are a native of the Colorado Front Range, or simply visiting Estes Park on a family vacation this summer, feel free to stop in our shop and learn more about any of these products!
