When you’re setting out on a summer Colorado fly fishing adventure, there are a few things you should remember to pack with you. On our guided trips, we’ll provide you with all the necessary gear, but if you’re heading out on your own, you’ll want to make sure you have all the necessities. Kirks Fly Shop has all you need for a successful fly fishing excursion. Here are a few of the items that will help you enjoy your fly fishing trip.
Well Stocked Tackle
Pack your fly rods and reels. This one seems obvious, but sometimes it doesn’t hurt to remind yourself to bring the tools for the job. While one rod is an absolute must, bringing two rods is a good idea. If one breaks, you’ll have a backup and you won’t have to pack it in early.
Remember your waders. While it’s possible to fish without waders, it’s far less pleasant and guaranteed to get you wet. Waders will let you stay out on the cold rivers longer.
Sun protection is a must! The summer sun in Colorado is intense, especially at the high altitude of Estes Park. A wide brimmed hat will protect your face, ears, and neck from overhead sun, but you’ll want to pack sunblock and sunglasses as well. The glare off the water can be blinding at times and can actually cause sunburn as easily as overhead sun.
Bring good footwear with you. You’ll want to pack shoes that dry easily and protect you from slipping on the slick rocks in the Big Thompson. If you don’t want specifically designed wading shoes, tennis shoes and hiking sandals will provide adequate protection for your feet.
